Good morning, Becki! Thank you very much for your email. How unfortunate to hear - that's really awful. People can't seem to take someone that's different - lawn nazis I suppose. I have come across some article and sites pertaining to growing veggies in the front yard, I do hope they help {see below} I wish you and your friend much success in your fight. Please keep me posted on your progress. See you along the path.... My boyfriend and I just vanquished the local Neighborhood Association's attempt to force us to make our beautiful flower-meadow front yard into a conventional lawn. They tried reporting us to the city inspection department (for "excessive vegetation"!), and sending us nasty letters (about our "weed-infested yard"). The bottom line is this: if you are in compliance with city code, and you have no contractual obligation to your pesky neighbors (called CC&Rs - Covenants, Conditions & Restrictions, found in homeowner association agreements, leases and deeds), then there is really nothing they can do but whine. So - call the city inspectors and ask them to take a look at your yard, like we did - they were very nice in our case, also tell them your neighbors are harassing you so they are put on notice about it and get the impression that you are the "good guy" here. If you have a CC&R to comply with, get the exact wording and see whether you can work around it and still keep your veggies - maybe a partial law, for example, will satisfy it, and maybe you can call your veggies "ornamentals" or something, whatever the CC&R allows. If it helps, I can send you a copy of the letter we sent to our Neighborhood Association, which shut them up. It does not strictly pertain to vegetable gardens, but it may give you some ideas on how to approach this issue. Anyway, it worked for us! Good luck!

Oops - the words "partial law" should have been "partial lawn". Sorry.

THE MOBILE HOME PARK ASSOCIATION HAS SIMILAR RULES THAT I RAN AFOUL OF THIS PAST SUMMER. SINCE I AM THE TEMPORARY LIVE-IN CAREGIVER DAUGHTER FOR MY ELDERLY MOTHER, THEY JUST MADE ME REMOVE THE TOMATOES, CROOKNECK SQUASH & LEMON CUCUMBER-- (JUST AS THEY WERE COMING INTO PRODUCTION). THE 2 KINDS OF DECORATIVE LETTUCE GROWING ALONGSIDE WERE IGNORED. SO I WILL NOW PLANT ROOT (BEET, CARROT, GARLIC, ETC) & LEAF(GREENS) CROPS,-- ANYTHING WITHOUT VISIBLE SEEDS OR FRUITS & I SHOULD BE OK. GOOD GROWING TO YOU, K.
