NOTES ON WINDOWS98

4-22-98 Brian Covey: Reading Windows Magazine titled "Win98 The Complete Upgrade Guide" I have found some interesting facts.

On the Start button, under Programs/accessories/system tools you will find some interesting new appelets. One of wich is SYSTEM INFORMATION. This program will tell you ANYTHING you want to know about your Win98 instalation. This appelet also has menu items to start many of the other system tools.
Also in system tools you will find an appelet called DRIVE CONVERTER32. This will convert your FAT16 disk system to FAT32. This is a one-way ordeal. Once you go FAT32 you cannot go back short of reformatting.
Win Tune-up will delete caches and do a scandisk and then do a defrag. This is a new defrag that will place the programs you use most close together on the disk so that they load and cache better. This optimization gets better as you use Win98 more.
SystemFile Checker scans your system files to see if they are corrupted or otherwise damaged and gives you an easy way to re-install them. The appelet looked like you could configure it to scan ANY type of file you want to check.
Windows registry checker will scan the registry looking for potential problems and will make up to 5 backups.
You can now cut,copy,paste,move files and folders directly on the Start menu. No need to start up an explorer window except to rename
TweakUI is on the Beta CD under d:\tools\reskit\powertoys. It has many new features including the "X-Windows" feature that previously had to be seperately installed.
A Windows Scripting Host is mentioned on the CD. Not sure if this in new but it looked intriguing. INFO

Today I discovered a Win98 **Bug**??. Since I am using Beta 3 I hope the bug is fixed in the store version but I have found that if you try to use a context menu on the Desktop to create a new... "text document,Winzip file,Paint Shop Pro file" ect. that it won't do it. It will do a new "Folder" or a new "Shortcut" but none of the other new items worked. To duplicate this bug right click on the Desktop. Select "New" and then select "Text Document".
An annoying thing that I have found using VersaCheck Personal and some of the other mips products which really stands out using Win98 is the way that VC personal uses child windows. Start VCpersonal and select "New Account Desk". Once this portion of the program is started the program CANNOT be minimized. Nothing short of hitting CANCEL will do it. I tried the "Show Desktop" System tray program and this wouldn't even do it. This is probably the single most annoying thing about VersaCheck.

Found something with VersaCheck Personal. There is a help topic missing. "New Help Desk" / Select custom1 or custom2 check. On the "Note" select "Help" as the note tells you to. You will find that the help topic doesn't exist. Click here for a screen shot
