Number: 740 10/24/97  e-Forms chip locks up printer with 85 FLASH ERROR when printing status page or initializing.

Description:  If  "85 FLASH ERROR" displays when trying to print a status page, or initialize or program a e-Forms chip, the e-Forms chip may be faulty; r

If the printer locks up when trying to print a status page, or initialize or program a e-Forms chip, there may be a problem with printer firmware. See the workaround and Special Note below.

Workaround:  Turn printer power off, remove the e-Forms chip and make sure the blue jumper is pulled off for the printers that need it removed (P-series.) Reinstall the e-Forms chip in the recommended slot (see below.) Turn the printer back on. First initialize the e-Forms chip, then print a status page, then proceed to program the e-Forms chip. Thereafter, before initializing, printing a status page or programming, cycle the printer power off and back on. Wait for the printer to complete programming prior to cycling power and then sending the request for a status page; wait for the lights to stabilize and the single READY light to be on before sending data to the printer.

Resolution: In work

Special Note:  The 6P's firmware appears to be somewhat touchy where the use of ROM e-Forms chips (such as ours) is concerned. We therefore recommend, before returning a e-Forms chip for exchange, trying the following procedures:

  1. If the printer is a 4MP, remove the PostScript module before using the e-Forms chip.
  2. Use the far-left slot (marked 3, identified as slot 1 in the Self Test printout) for the e-Forms chip. Note that the printer identifies the slots as 1-2-3 left to right, even though they are marked 3-2-1 on the metal frame next to them.
  3. Do not use the "6P Enhanced" driver; use the "6P Standard" driver also supplied with the printer.
  4. Cycle printer power off and on before sending data to the e-Forms chip (initializing or downloading) or before printing a status page.
