Hewlett Packard LaserJet 9050

Installation

Summary: To support the 9050, use a RAM BOX loading of the standard Program 5.0 type BOX rather than a NetBOX

The RAM Disk on this printer is device "1:" rather than device "0:" as is normal on FSA printers because it comes with a Compact Flash card which provides 2MB FLASH on device 0: If a standard NetBOX is attached, it will actually program the FLASH over and over again, eventually causing it to fail. Do not use a standard NetBOX on the 9050!

In order to load the RAM Disk, the NetBOX must be specially programmed to use device 1: rather than device 0:

However: There is a firmware bug in older versions of the 9050 that causes it to not read the pclResourceFile from the second FSA device. So even the custom programmed NetBOX can only work with a 9050 having firmware datecode 20050726 or later.

Rather than use the NetBOX, it turns out that the RAM BOX works just fine for this printer. The printer does not drop RAM resources between network print jobs. i.e. Resource Saving works correctly. Remember: the RAM BOX is just a program type box (just like a NetBOX) but programmed with the raw eForms image MAC files so that they are just dumped into printer RAM when the BOX sees the printer power up, come online, or every 5 minutes or so. This is basically a "download" solution but with the BOX managing the download to keep the printer RAM loaded even after power cycles, resets, and so on.
