I&#8217;m designing a PIC-based circuit for a home security system, and a highly desirable feature would be for the end-user to be able to update the PIC&#8217;s firmware while the circuit is connected to the user&#8217;s PC...<BR>
<BR>
I have played extensively with 16F877s hooked up to a PC via USART (and networked together (via I2C)), and I highly value this chip&#8217;s ability to &#8216;write to its own Program Memory&#8217;, allowing an circuit design that is hooked up to a PC to also update the firmware on demand.  (Hence allowing the variety of &#8216;bootloaders&#8217; we have seen on many sites...)<BR>
<BR>
Is this feature of the 877 to &#8216;self-program&#8217; found in MicroChip&#8217;s 18F series?  If so, what is the &#8216;technical buzzword&#8217; to &#8216;self-program&#8217; I should look in the spec sheets for to find the chips I need?<BR>
<BR>
I need lots of bytes for my firmware/user data and I can&#8217;t stand bank switching, so I&#8217;m really looking forward to knowing &#8216;big&#8217; chips...<BR>
<BR>
Also, do you have a recommendation on a &#8216;really good&#8217; 18F chip?  My absolute requirements are:<BR>
-	I2C<BR>
-	USART<BR>
-	Lots of ram (&gt;64K bytes or 32K &#8216;Program Words&#8217;)<BR>
<BR>
My &#8216;wish list&#8217; includes:<BR>
-	Internal oscillator (to reduce cost)<BR>
-	Some PWM (Pulse Width Modulators)<BR>
-	Many ADCs<BR>
-	40 PDIP package (for development) with a 64 / 80 pin surface mount package for the actual device (and have the two chips be mostly firmware similar)<BR>
<BR>
(My current list of &#8216;must know&#8217; chips includes the 18F452, the 18F6680 and the 18F8720)<BR>
<BR>
Other related questions to the 18F...<BR>
-	What good quality / low cost C compiler would you recommend for the 18F?<BR>
-	Any good resources / sites / code samples for the 18F family?<BR>
