Why not use a 68HC11 for the controller.<BR>
It has duel config as a microcontroller (RAM ROM etc internal) and a microprocessor (External RAM ROM).<BR>
It also has a hardwired serial bootloader that supports the rs232 protocol (just requires a line driver such as max232).<BR>
All of the config options are selected using 2 pins MODA &amp; MODB.<BR>
