Whole House Fans
Used to remove hot air from inside a home and replace it with cooler air
from the outside in the late afternoon or evening. Very effective after hot
summer days when there is little or no wind. Even a short run can cool the
house 10 to 20 degrees.
Combine with "earth tubes" to cool during the heat
of the day.
Once the outside air has been drawn into the house, there is no point in
running the fan any longer. Fans with low speed modes or automatic controlls
may be justified.
Calculate the interior square footage of living area (do not include garage,
attic or basement) and multiply the total square footage by three. This will
give you the CFM number required for the whole house fan
Consider using some foam, rubber or other material to isolate vibration when
mounting the fan.
The shutter will leak hot air during the winter unless the fan can be sealed
in the fall and re-opened in the spring.
