Take a look at this /monster/ foam cutter that alta noob and his dad will be using to make 18ft SUPS (like over-sized surf boards). It moves at 250ipm (inches per minute) driven by 4 SLAm drivers. It's a three axis machine, but the gantry is moved by a pair of motors, one on each side with gearboxes and a linear rack and pinion vs the standard lead screw and nut found on smaller machines. Total cost for the drive electronics (less the power supply and heatsink) was $170, 4 SLAm's, the 4Axis board and some misc components.
