Loading the Index Server Snap-In

After you have installed IIS and Index Server, you should load the Index Server snap-in into Microsoft Management Console (MMC). This tool gives you a simplified way of creating, adjusting, and monitoring catalogs and directories.

1. In MMC, select Console Root.
2. In the Console menu, select Add/Remove Snap-in.
3. On the Standalone property page of the Add/Remove Snap-in dialog box, click the Add button.
4. In the Add Standalone Snap-in dialog box, select Index Server, and click OK.

The Connect to Computer dialog box appears, with Local computer selected.


5. If you want the Index Server snap-in to manage a computer other than the local computer (the one that MMC is running on), select Another computer, and type the name of the computer.
6. Click Finish.

Index Server appears in the Add/Remove Snap-in dialog box.


7. Click OK.

The Index Server snap-in appears in MMC.

With this new graphical administration tool, you can do the following tasks easily and effectively:

• Checking Status: Describes how to check indexing status and see the properties of directories that are indexed as well as the cached properties.
• Setting Global Properties: Tells how to set values that affect all catalogs on a server.
• Creating and Configuring Catalogs: Tells how to create new catalogs and configure them for the best performance.
• Creating and Removing Directories: Describes how to add and remove directories that are indexed.
• Adjusting the Property Cache: Tells how to add and remove a property from the cache and how to modify property settings.
• Moving and Removing a Catalog: Tells how to remove a catalog using the Index Server Manager snap-in.
• Forcing a Scan: Tells now to force Index Server to scan a virtual directory.
• Forcing a Merge: Tells how to force Index Server to merge all indexes into one master and when it is appropriate to do so.
