Cooling

Most unwanted heat comes into a home or other building through windows during the heat of the day. Install double pane windows, close them in the morning, shade them during times when the sun hits them directly. Since the temperature is lower at night, open the windows at night and collect that cool air for the next day. This means installing windows that you can leave open at night safely. The open part must be protected with bars, or the window screen setup to trigger an alarm if it is removed or cut. In this way, home defense is related to home cooling.

During the day, the walls and roof of a building will slowly heat and by later afternoon, the outside heat will have penetrated to the inside. As sun sets and the external temperature drops, moving that cooler outside air inside to cool down the (now) hot interior walls and ceiling can be accomplished with a "whole house fan" installed in the attic or ceiling. This is especially useful in an area where there are few or no evening breezes.
