What is RTFtoHTML?

RTFtoHTML converts word processing documents into HTML. To use the filter, you must first save your document as a RTF (Rich Text Format) document. Then convert the document by dragging it onto RTFtoHTML (in a Macintosh or Windows environment) or by running the filter from a command line (Unix.) RTFtoHTML provides a way for you to quickly publish all of your word processing (Word, WordPerfect, Claris,...) documents. Its features include: It's FAST - RTFtoHTML speeds through conversions of single documents or large collections without having to open each individually. It runs virtually everywhere: Windows 95/NT, Macintosh (68k or PowerPC), Unix (linux, SCO, FreeBSD, Solaris, AIX, IRIX...), VMS and other platforms can be added on demand. You can add your own standard banners and navigation buttons to the start and/or end of every document or page. You can select different looks from very simple to elaborate without changing your documents in any way. It can split large documents into smaller linked pages, complete with hypertext indexes and Table of Contents. It is completely customizable. All of the HTML markup and translation tables can be modified with a simple text editor. It supports tables, frames, standard HTML (4.0 and earlier versions) as well as popular extensions. It supports UNICODE and language-dependant titles. It integrates into your environment with a batch style interface, and support for external command and scripting (Unix commands, shell, DOS Batch files, Applescript, Perl) It recognizes MS Word 97 and 98 hyperlinks, references and bookmarks, so you can utilize cross references within and between documents. Paragraph and character styles can be preserved through the translation allowing you to generate HTML with CSS and XML markup.

What's new in Release 4.12

Support for .BMP files is now correct. If you have an RTF file that contains .BMP style graphics (FrameMaker will produce this kind of RTF), RTFtoHTML now generates correct .BMP files. Note that FrameMaker saves its images as Black and White when generating RTF. Also note that other word processors generate .BMP graphics, which have some color information, but they do NOT include a palette. RTFtoHTML uses a default palette for these files. Index generation was completely overhauled. This corrects problems in formatting as well as aborts when generating indexes (-x option) Preformatted blocks (<PRE>) formatting was generating extra vertical spacing. This has been corrected. The RTF version of the users guide was causing MSWord to abort on Windows Platforms. This is a MSWord bug, but I have included a .DOC version of the file which Word can handle. (Word 98/Macintosh can read either.... How about THAT!) ALIGN=JUSTIFY has been turned off by default. It renders poorly in Netscape - but you can turn it back on by editing html-trn. Macintosh Apple Event handling of the Open event is improved. The Open event now completes translation of the document before returning. You can now set ShortNames from within trnflag.trn - previously this had to be set on the command line. A bug which caused tables to not be terminated correctly at the end of a file has been corrected. Corrected a problem where NoGraphics (-G option) would cause links to be incorrectly generated. Corrected several potential problems in 16-bit versions of the filter (Macintosh 68k and DOS/Win 3.1) with numeric overflows. Cropping information for images is now available to be inserted into the HTML or passed on to an image filter. Short file names now contain 6 characters and two digits followed by the extension. For example: myfile01.htm, which is consistant with how it was done in the 3.x versions. If you have more than 99 images, or split the document into more than 99 parts, you should set ShortFileDigits to 3, which will reserve three digits in the filename (i.e. myfil001.htm) Elimintated <BASE> tag when it contains no attributes (in deference to weblint.)

Changes from Release 3.x to Release 4.x

Complete table support: spanned columns and rows, HTML 4.0 table markup, and table header/footers. Complete support for text font, color and size. UNICODE character set translation Support for non-latin fonts: each font can select its own translation tables thus supporting Cyrillic as well as Dingbats Character styles can be used to select special markup in addition to formatting properties (double underline..) Scripting support: RTFtoHTML can perform system() and Applescript calls to support integration with other applications All markup and much of the logic of the filter is now accessible in html-trn and can be modified for your environment Include file processing, conditional expansion and variable definition and expansion support customization of the filter for different projects, users and output styles Many bugfixes from version 3.x
