It talks about "wind droughts." I wonder how solar works out. It is true that solar only generates during the day, but that is also when the peak load is. Perhaps wind and pumped storage only has to cover overnight demand. Also, I wonder how solar and wind production smooth out over a large area. Can transmission from high output areas cover low output areas? As others have pointed out, although this is going to cost, it appears to be a necessary cost. We just moved from Colorado to Arizona. Our new house came with a 3.3 kW PV system. I have been tracking its output, energy pulled from the grid, energy returned to the grid, overall consumption, etc. I'm calculating the percentage of the consumption that is produced by our PV system and graphing this against average temperature. The scatter chart is truly scattered, but there is a trend of more produced from solar as average temperature drops. It will be interesting to see how this turns out as we move into cooler months.
