He had many goes at the timing and eventually realised the wire colours on either the magneto or the coil (I can't remember which) were swapped from what the manual said they should be, but he had bought it new and that was the way it had always been so that was the way he kept it. It was also at one extreme of the timing adjustment to get the spark correct. One day he got fed up and swapped the leads, retimed it - it was now set up at the centre of adjustment range - and it started a lot easier.
