I first noticed this in the 1970s when I tried switching audio with a relay designed to switch AC at 1 amp. Most recently, I found that a lithium primary coin battery in a holder would become intermittent since we were only drawing 10 uA. This caused a digital cinema server to lose its private key. There, we changed to a soldered in battery. I agree that reed relays are a good solution. I wonder if the existing relays could be rescued using the current version of Cramolin ( https://caig.com/ ). Since it stays on the contacts, it might be able to protect the contacts.
