I don't remember the particulars, this was from maybe 10 years ago.
But I just couldn't setup the comparator the same way, the config
table for the 16f627/8 had a combination that I used but which didn't
exist on the newer part.

The price of the 16F627a-i/p-nd is $1.86 for any quantity at Digikey
but you are right, it's hard to justify a part change based on price
alone.
