Dear Michael, My opinion is that nowadays there is very little need and reasons to program in assembly. A few small blocks of inline assembly to replace code that the compiler generates too poorly, OK. One or two small modules entirely in assembly to implement timing-critical routines like delays, OK too. I would not write assembly code to overcome insufficient speed of the MCU. I simply would choose a more modern and faster part.
