I don't recall there ever not being tags - but that may perhaps say more
about my memory than about reality :-).
I do remember tags being slightly extended 'some while ago'.

I like them, but as has been noted, they are not so needed for traffic
reasons as they once were.

One valuable area is [OT] as it allows people to have some expectation of
OTw content - which some really wish to stay away from. Or, did, way back.

The general opinion in the responses (margin of error ~~=3D 100/sqrt(8)% *
~=3D +/-  35%) seems to be that they are wanted.
