I broke my collar bone (allong with several ribs, finger and T7) in 2001. The bone was broken near the sternum. My "sports doctor" basically told me to suck it up and get back to work after a few weeks. He seemed unconcerned that I would do any harm by flexing the shoulder etc. The threat of not doing it was that I'd "be stuck like that" if I didn't start using it. I was a network cable installer at the time, so you can imagine the range of motion required to "get back to work". Apparently, he was right, I've regained full motion, even if I do have a strange bump where the bone rejoined at an angle. I'm not saying you should do this, now or ever, just relaying my story. If your doctor tells you to use it, but it seems odd and unnatural to you, maybe you should listen to him.
