I had thought that someone would catch the reference: Fred Saberhagen -> Berserker Base In one of the short stories there is a force field that deflects everything, except faster than light objects, in such case they can breach, but afterwards are sent "in a direction perpendicular to the speed of light" and cease to exist in this universe. And yes, the story pointed out this incongruence "perpendicular to the speed of light" that cannot be understood, but it is this way.
