I had something similar happen when I was trying to rig up a prank. I had a "novelty" device which made fart sounds and I was connecting it to an external amp and speaker to make it somewhat louder as a part of a prank. I didn't know what the output level would be so I kept increasing the gain of the amp and was getting disappointing results. Suddenly the amp BLASTED a fart sound so loud that the entire office heard it.
