LVP mode is enabled as default on these devices but can be overridden by applying the normal high voltage method. All my old programmers (I still use K128 occasionally) had a 10K pull down resistor on the RB3 PGM pin (24). This pin is active in low voltage mode. MCRL(Vpp) (pin 1) should be pulled low via a 10Kish resistor and is forced high voltage during programming. I don't remember any other special tricks.
