Exactly what kind of consumer and industrial electronic equipment? There could be specific standards for certain types of equipment that states the colors for indicators. For instance, IEC 61010-1 Safety requirements for electrical equipment for measurement, control and laboratory use - Part 1: General requirements, edition 3, which could cover some industrial equipment, references IEC 60073. Push-buttons and actuators of emergency stop devices, and indicators used only to indicate a warning or danger or the need for urgent action, shall be coloured red and coded as specified in IEC 60073. If the meaning of colour relates to the safety of persons or the environment, supplementary means of coding shall be provided (see IEC 60073). It also states that a risk assessment could be required and that in turn could show that there is a risk with having red indicators for other functions. And IEC 60950-1 Information technology equipment - Safety - Part 1: General requirements, which covers a lot of consumer equipment, also references IEC 60073 regarding colour for safety. However, it also states - Where colours are used for functional controls or indicators, any colour, including red, is permitted provided that it is clear that safety is not involved. So, I guess it depends. Most standards set requirements for indicators and colours only where the indicator involve safety. The trend is that more and more product standards reference usability engineering and risk management and if your risk assessment shows that there is no risk by using red colour for non safety indicators and controls, red could be used. /Ruben On Tue, 20 Jun 2017 17:39:20 +0000, Bob Blick wrote: > IEC 60073 covers all man-machine interface, but my question has to do > with consumer and industrial electronic equipment. >=20 > Thanks, >=20 > Bob > ________________________________________ > From: piclist-bounces@mit.edu on behalf of > David C Brown > Sent: Tuesday, June 20, 2017 10:17 AM > To: Microcontroller discussion list - Public. > Subject: Re: [EE] use of the color red for indicators >=20 > Are you referring to indicator (turn signal) lights on motor cars or to > lamps on electronic equipment? >=20 > In the former case the lights must be amber not red.. >=20 > I have never come across any restrictions on the latter.
