It's been a while since I looked at this, but Battery University would be a=
 good place to start.  That and a copy of the data sheet for the cells you =
are using.
NIMH may be the most difficult of the common battery chemistries to charge =
properly.
My charger just barely fit in an Atmel Tiny26 and had six discrete charge m=
odes, with complex rules for moving between them according to battery tempe=
rature, battery voltage, current, probably a couple other variables I don't=
 recall.
