Speculation.

On the one hand the hardware description languages for integrated
circuits are so remarkably stable that Microchip may have been able to
merge silicon intellectual property (IP) from quite a wide field.

On the other hand we're not looking forward to hearing more about bugs
in IP that end up affecting chips from more than one vendor.  ;-)

I agree, looks like a nice chip.
