That is crossing my mind. The low frequency of the MC34063 does work
against it

I've got the parts for some linear options - 7805s, 7805 + 2N2955,
LM317s, LM350s, etc. Not so much for SMPS but I have a feeling
there's an LM2576 around here somewhere. I'd even have a go with
a PIC

So I can cobble something together as a one-off for now and pick up a
better switcher later. I'd still be interested to see how far I can take th=
e
MC34063, even if it means a 1mH inductor. At least I'd know not to do
*that* again :-)
