The Microchip HV5308 I posted about shortly after the original request=20 will do what I need as a price that's viable. One small niggle with it is that the serial inputs on it are CMOS=20 thresholds, so I'll need to use a translator from the PIC / AVR. Thanks to everyone for their input.
