It seems that the OP is using a capacitor to lower slowly the Vgs to the point that the relay opens. I don't think it is safe from the relay contact's life perspective. With the coil current slowly diminishing the attraction force will also diminish to the point that the low contact pressure could cause the contacts to heat and erode before opening totally, causing hot spots and perhaps arcing. A safer approach would be using some sort of Schmitt Trigger to drive the transistor, so the turn-off will be fast after the trip point is met.
