Hi Gordon, I have a couple of PIC-based circuits for driving clock solenoids which also have moments of high current demand. To save costs I use just a small transformer to charge capacitors from which the current dump comes. The recharging of those capacitors depresses the PSU for a short time, well below the PIC's minimum Vcc I tried a resistor + reservoir cap to isolate the PIC from the current demand but it wasn't enough.
