The gears would all be visible through cutouts in th= e case ... That could be controlled by a PIC that listens to one of the 60kHz time fre= quency's (can they be received in NZ?) and with a magnet in the ends of the= hands and a hall effect device at the 12 o'clock position you would know e= very hour what time it is displaying.
