You are not alone Bob, I hate XC8 and MPLabX, I love the older PIC16 devices, the PIC16F690 is my alltime favorite and notepad++ and MPASM are all that are needed. This past year I have been playing with a free compiler, Great Cow Basic, initially I didn't take it seriously until I discovered that it has a great IDE and built in assembler. I like it so much that I have started contributing low level code (Written in assemble of course) for inclusion in the core libraries. As for the old ledgends I was dissapointed yesterday when I found that the domain Myke.com is up for grabs and all his code has dissapeard.
