So for all of the complaining about Eagle being purchased by Autodesk, ther= e is some silver linings, at least for me. I've been running on version 4.16, professional version, for...well..as you= can see from the version, quite a long time. Prior to being bought by Element14, they had a decent upgrade path, I belie= ve it was version 5 I was looking at then, but for the most part I could co= ntinue to do my projects in 4.16. I played with the upgrades, and so I've = gotten comfortable with the new features, etc. But when Element14 purchase= d them, they did away with a very generous upgrade path, and if you had a v= ersions that were older than 2 revs....had to buy the whole thing. Bummer, that's $1400ish. Ouch. Well new project arrives, and client wants to review the designs in process= so....have to use the new version. First board was small enough, but the = next one exceeds the free size. Autodesk reverted back to the old upgrade pricing structure, so now I can g= et the latest version for only $377, much easier on the budget. Glad I waited :-) This is not to elicit responses to how good or bad Autodesk support policie= s are, or why not use another 'free' package...diptrace, etc. I happen to= like Eagle, I also have used Altium, Allegro, OrCad and blue/red tape on p= lastic (Bishops Graphics...remember them?)
