Yes, mistakes were made by all to get in that position, I am hard pressed to believe that many other pilots could have put that plane down with as little damage as they did. Definitely worth the read for anybody that has even a passing interest in such things. My faded memory puts the barest sketch of an outline here: jetliner full of people at altitude runs out of fuel. Fate smiles. The pilot just happens to also be a private glider pilot, having previously trained at a (now disused) runway very close to their location. He proceeds to do a dead stick landing in a 767. Zero loss of life. Plane flew out of the airport a week or so later.
