I hate Windows, but I still use it just as a frontend because it looks nice and has better font rendering than I was ever able to get out of Xorg. It runs the IntelliJ IDEs, etc. I have the actual files sitting on a local Linux server via Samba, and I do the actual committing/compiling/testing over SSH. But as far as Linux for desktop goes, Ubuntu is a solid pick. Mint is just Ubuntu with a few customizations. Gnome has gone downhill since Gnome 2, and KDE just keeps getting better and better.
