hmm, at least the ex-SMSC parts that microchip have taken over still=20
seem to have SMSC datasheets. Indeed things have improved since the=20
Microchip takeover, pre-takeover I couldn't find any documentation=20
online on talking to the LAN951x (the datasheet only covered the=20
electrical side of things) now I can easilly find the databook that=20
covers software development on Microchip's website.

Microchip seem to have been on a bit of an aquisition spree over the=20
past few years, SMSC (makers of Ethernet controllers and tiny ethernet=20
switches) , micrel (makers of more Ethernet products), ISSC (apparently=20
makers of bluetooth stuff for IOT) supertex (something to do with=20
"medical lighting and industrial") eqcologic ("equaliser and coax=20
transciver products").
