John,
agree, constant current generator its ok, but will never ends the charging
process until the voltage drop across the LM317 will be small enough,
meaning the voltage on NIMH will be too high as long the solar cell is
lighted.

If the system has to work continuously for months, will be  a problem, even
with short periods of heavy load on NIMH.
