Given that the application is a lamp dimmer it is important to note that th=
e
perceived intensity is not linear with respect to the PWM. By using a
non-linear transfer function (lookup table?) you might be able map more of
the A/D counts to where it matters. You could even, with a little bit of
code complication,  dither the PWM between two adjacent values to improve
the effective resolution.
