And then only if it is detented so that it cannot sit on the edge of a tran=
sition, and sometimes think that the bit is a 1, and other times a 0, due t=
o mechanical vibration as someone walks across the floor.

I really think you are on a hiding to nothing attempting to have no jitter =
in the last bit of resolution. With 1024 steps from off to full on, can you=
 really distinguish between adjacent steps? It's is smaller than a 1dB step=
 in sound I think.
