I scraped away the rubbery stuff from the glass, and there is a tiny chip, about 2mm square. Traces on glass are barely visible, but it's clear there is not a big number of them. So it must be something very simple, like numeric display with several digits. I could not find any other display by Varitronix, which looks even close to this one, or has similar number of wires, etc. Datasheet archives mostly have nothing, or have wrong datasheets. For the moment it seems like a dead end. Probably it's not varitronix at all, as the logo on flex cable is completely different. Or probably they have changed their logo. I was really hoping to use these, as they have no big wide frame around, unlike all the cheap chinese alphanumeric displays. Big frame requires big front panel.
