In a younger life I had opportunities in both small aircraft and=20 sailboat to be out on clear nights and long trips. I found that picking=20 your favorite stars was easier to steer than messing with other tools.=20 My hat is off to anyone who can get a good sight with a sextant under=20 those conditions. Dead reckoning assumes that you know something about which way and how=20 hard the wind is blowing. After the first hour that information is a=20 guess. If you cannot see the celestial bodies at night you best depend=20 on your electronics. Sometimes "second star on the right is good enough". When the destination is reached +/- 4 miles it is normally a good job.
