Update to my rant wrt mplabx before:
- I apologize, I was somewhat irate after several wasted hours, also for ot=
her
  reasons.
- The mplabx works fine once it is restarted 2 times or so assuming a fresh
  jdk installation. Apparently some things are not set up right from 1st ti=
me.
  In case of trouble one should exit the login session and log back on afte=
r
  reinstalling/upgrading java, then try to start mplabx again.
- Online connection (internet) is absolutely necessary when the mplabx star=
ts
  up the 1st few times, some updates appear to happen on the fly when this
  occurs. After that the machine can be used offline or online.
- For disasm and single stepping to work, it is necessary to select the
  relevant 'save intermediate files' option in the Loading section of the
  project properties. The F7 step keyboard shortcut appears after the above
  updates occur in the background, and once the project is compiled with th=
e
  intermediate files option enabled.
- The disappearing windows and so on problems I was seeing were apparently
  caused by the ide cleaning up the temp files, such as disasm, while they
  were in use, causing java exceptions.
