It is far enough away from the inductor that it is so loosely coupled it is=
n't seen as a shorted turn.

IIRC the can needs to be twice the coil diameter for this to be the case, o=
r the coil needs to be shielded (i.e. in a ferrite cup or similar that is p=
art of the magnetic loop).
