This comes to mind: http://www.linear.com/products/multicell_battery_stack_monitor I also did a battery monitoring system for an electric vehicle that had something like 10 12V batteries in series. Each battery ran a PIC measuring the battery voltage (and other stuff). The result was put in a packet that included the battery number. This was sent out the PIC UART to an opto coupler. The Opto coupler drove an open collector bus that linked all the batteries together. The monitors randomly transmit their results. There are occasionally collisions causing the packet to be thrown out (due to CRC error). But, overall, every battery got through at least once a second.
