Most recent PCs will slow if they get too hot, and if that doesn't do the trick, power off. There are few things more demanding of the CPU than a memory test. Worse yet, a DOS memory test program won't know how to slow the CPU, so it will be a lot more consistent forcing the CPU to protect itself by shutting down. I vote for thermal. Clean that fan.
