Hi Russell: The go to book for this is "Full Rip 9.0". It's interesting how they figur= ed out that this happened, how big is was, &Etc. This is about the subduction zone fault between Cape Mendocino and the Cana= dian border where the plate under the ocean=20 is butting heads with the continent. It's been doing this for about 500 ye= ars (since the last mag 9 quake) and a lot of=20 compressive force has built up. This is very different from the classical California quake which is a strik= e-slip where the two plates are sliding in=20 opposite directions. These make for quakes like the '06 which was no where= near a bad as the subduction type quakes.
