There are other variations of the Allegro sensors that do not have the curr=
ent sensor run through the chip, and my immediate thought on reading your o=
riginal post was to get one of those and tape it to the battery wire, and i=
t senses the magnetic field from that. The biggest problem with whatever me=
thod you choose will be accuracy at low currents.
