I have used the single transistor overload method in power supplies and
have use several different dedicated current sensor chips but had never
seen a PIC used the way I envisaged.   The tip about a parallel diode is
useful - I had been planning to protect the PIC with a zener.  I suppose I
could put two diodes in series to increase the resolution.
