That is kind of the path of least resistance since everyone has it, and if you don't need a lot of special functionality, it is pretty good. A lightweight, free tool is Dia. It's whole purpose in life is diagramming, so you don't have all the weight of a million features that you'll never use. Personally, I prefer dot from Graphviz.
