I've seen (and probably still have) two different types of units. The cheapie hair-dryer units use a triac circuit set at about 50%=20 phase control. This is fine for heating elements and brushed DC=20 motors but not suitable for much other stuff. The better units are=20 good for a full 15 Amps.
