Part of the original enquiry was whether the relays in the circuit could be replaced with FETs. I couldn't see a good reason to do that. And now my thoughts are turning to whether this switch could be replaced by either a momentary relay (two NO relays ?) or an equivalent H-bridge controlled by the SPDT momentary switch I know I can get I'll keep that as Plan B.
