Lost in the thread, I think, is that most people here have been using SD=20
cards in 1-bit SPI mode and not the native 4-bit SD/SPI mode.

SD cards are notoriously randomly compliant in SPI mode, whereas in=20
SD/SPI mode they have to work or they would be considered dysfunctional=20
by users of cameras/phones.
